Heartopia Pets & Dog Food Guide

Quick Dog Food Answer

For adoptable dogs: Dog Food from Mrs. Joan is the safest default feed. Community trackers still disagree on one universal favorite food for every dog, so treat breed reactions as a test-and-track route, not a guaranteed global list.

For wild and farm animals: favorite foods are more stable. Foxes lean toward meat and fish, Sea Otters toward shrimp and shells, Chickens toward corn, and Cows toward wheat or grass. See our complete animal favorites list.

Pet Adoption Route

The clean route is simple: unlock the hobby, finish the first cat flow, then expand into dogs and Oak-Oak only when you actually need those systems.

  1. Reach D.G. Level 12
That unlocks Mrs. Joan's Pet Shop and the Cat Care hobby.
  2. Finish the cat onboarding first
Cats are the real first gate. Dog care sits behind that intro path.
  3. Add dogs after the tutorial clears
Once Cat Care is live, dog adoption and food testing become the next stable branch.
  4. Handle Oak-Oak separately
Oak-Oak belongs to the Astralis Forest line, not the town pet-shop route.

Do not mix every animal system together

Cats and dogs come from Mrs. Joan. Oak-Oak comes from the forest quest line. Wild-animal feeding tables are a separate route again. Keeping those three paths separate makes the page easier to use and easier to maintain.

Official Fact Check

Official Heartopia channels show the pet-care hobby and companion systems, but they do not publish a full public favorite-food spreadsheet for every dog, cat, and animal. Use this page as the route layer, then confirm pet unlock prompts and current food reactions in the live client after major patches.

Dog Food List & Safe Test Foods

Food bucket Best use How to treat it
Dog Food Daily baseline for adoptable dogs Use this first when you want a safe, repeatable feed instead of guesswork.
Simple cooked dishes Testing heart reactions on specific dogs Try low-cost foods in small batches and note which ones outperform Dog Food.
Community test foods Breed-specific experiments Some community trackers report mushrooms and simple meals as candidates, but do not treat them as universal favorites until your own file confirms it.
Animal-specific favorites Foxes, otters, chickens, cows, and other non-dog animals Keep these on the Wild Animals and Animal Favorites route, not in Mrs. Joan's dog-care lane.

Pet Owner Shortcuts

These are the pages most pet players open next once the basic unlock path is clear:

Pet Troubleshooting

Having trouble with your pets? Here are solutions to the most common issues players run into:

Can't See the Feed Icon?

The feed icon only appears when your pet is actually hungry. If your cat or dog was recently fed, wait a few in-game hours for their hunger bar to drop before the icon shows up again. You can check their status by tapping on them directly.

Missing Pet Bowl?

Pet bowls need to be crafted at your Workbench or purchased from Mrs. Joan. Check under the Pet category in your crafting menu. If you already have one, make sure it's placed in your home and not stuck in storage.

Pet training quest won't complete

Try these steps: (1) Make sure your pet has enough energy for training. (2) Follow the on-screen prompts exactly—some require specific timing. (3) If the quest disappeared from your log but isn't complete, restart the game fully. (4) If stuck, report to official Discord with your platform and steps to reproduce.

Pet seems stuck at 0 energy

Pet energy regenerates over real time, not game time. If it's been several hours and energy is still at 0, try: (1) Fully close and reopen the game. (2) Check if your pet needs food first—some actions require being fed. (3) If the issue persists after a restart, this may be a sync bug worth reporting.

Pet clipping through floors or walls

This is a known visual bug. Your pet isn't actually lost—try: (1) Walk to a different room or go outside. (2) Call your pet using the pet menu. (3) Restart the game if the pet stays stuck. Pets always return to normal after a reload.

Dog's "seek treasure" feature not working

The treasure-seeking ability has specific cooldowns and location requirements. Make sure you're in an outdoor area with spawnable items, and that you haven't used the feature recently. Some players report this works better after reaching higher dog care levels.

Cat care quest stuck after feeding

If you fed your cat immediately after adoption and the quest didn't register: (1) Wait for the cat to get hungry again and feed it a second time. (2) The tutorial expects you to see the "hungry" state first. This is a timing issue, not a permanent bug.

Still Stuck?

For bugs that persist after trying these fixes, report them on the official Heartopia Discord in #bug-reports. Include your platform (iOS/Android/PC), what you tried, and screenshots if possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I unlock cat care?

Cat Care unlocks at D.G. Level 12. Visit Mrs. Joan to start the adoption tutorial.

When do dogs unlock?

Dogs unlock after you complete the cat care tutorial. Dog reactions were added in version 0.4.2.

What can dogs eat in Heartopia?

Dog Food is the safest baseline. Community route trackers also test simple cooked foods on individual breeds, but the game does not publish one universal dog favorite list.

Do all dogs share the same favorite food?

Not reliably. Community data suggests dog reactions can differ, so treat favorites as a test-and-track system instead of assuming one list works for every dog.

What is Roaming Oak Timber used for?

Roaming Oak Timber is a special crafting material used to create nature-themed furniture and decorations.

Do pets leave if I skip care?

No. Skipping care just slows down XP and rewards; your pets remain available.
